MAGA Republicans Subvert U.S. Interests in the Middle East and Ukraine

QUICK READ: At this critical moment in history, MAGA  obstructionists are intent on subverting U.S policy in the Middle East and Ukraine. Last week Mike Johnson, the new MAGA House Speaker, proposed eliminating both additional military aid to Israel and Ukraine and humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.

BACKGROUND

On October 20 the White House sought $105 billion in supplemental funding to help defend Israel, provide humanitarian aid to Gaza, support Ukraine and Taiwan, and manage the influx of migrants at our Southern border.

MAGA House obstructionists, intent on subverting Biden’s initiative, refused to even take it up. Instead, the new Speaker pushed through a MAGA Israel funding bill whose $14.3 billion was entirely offset by eliminating $14.3 billion previously appropriated for IRS efforts to curtail tax fraud—which the Senate ignored and Biden threatened to veto.

Senators want a bill to aid Israel, Gaza, Ukraine, and Taiwan without IRS cuts, but GOP Senators are demanding it also include major border policy changes.

To prevent a government shutdown on November 18, Speaker Johnson now proposes a clean CR without any foreign aid component.

All this posturing ignores reality.

Without additional aid to Ukraine, Putin will prevail. The spiraling conflict in the Middle East and our failure to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza minimize the region’s human suffering.  Problems on our Southern border grow daily.

Last week, Senate Democrats weighed in constructively--insisting military aid to Israel be limited to defensive weapons, demanding significantly more humanitarian relief for Gaza, and urging Biden to support a tactical pause in fighting.
