Keep Up The Drumbeat

Background

Democrats govern for us all. Republicans attack our freedom to vote.

In 2004, one of our sons observed an elderly Black man in Raleigh NC being told by a poll worker that the flyer left on his door was misinformation and his voting place was some distance away. The man did not own a car, and Raleigh had virtually no public transportation at the time. The man, who was old enough to remember not having the freedom to register or vote safely, shuffled down the street, stopped at a trash can, ripped up his voter registration card, and then continued his trek home. After SCOTUS gutted the Voting Rights Act’s protections in 2013, this man, not being a driver, would have lacked the necessary ID to vote.

The For the People Act criminalizes disseminating misinformation to voters. It eliminates hours-long lines that impede hourly workers' freedom to vote and voter IDs requiring burdensome expense and travel to obtain.

Call your MoCs daily to insist they eliminate or reform the filibuster and lead their reluctant colleagues to pass legislation that protects our freedom to vote. Repetition works. We will keep up the drumbeat. We will persist. We will prevail.

GOP Senators: I'm calling today to ask you to stand up for our democracy by voting for the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in committees and on the floor of the Senate. You cannot claim you're not a racist and oppose protections from racially targeted voter suppression, even if you call the suppression ensuring integrity. Those who use that thinly veiled racist trope reveal who they are.
