PASS A BUDGET FOR ALL THE PEOPLE

Background

Now that Joe Biden won, the real work begins. Black, Indigenous and People of Color’s needs must be central to his administration and legislation, just as their votes were central to winning his presidency.

President-Elect Biden began by appointing the most diverse transition team ever. We urge him to appoint a diverse Cabinet and staff.

Meanwhile, Congress is negotiating FY 2021 spending bills. These bills could incorporate an anti-racist perspective but not without a fight. The Senate bills have no COVID relief and inadequate EPA funding, undermining Biden's agenda and hitting hurting communities even harder.

We ask our Members for:

  • extended unemployment coverage with the $600 supplement

  • budget relief for state and local governments

  • health care costs for COVID treatment, and protections for front-line health workers

  • Medicaid coverage for undocumented Americans, many of whom are working in essential services

  • full funding for the EPA so that BIPOC communities stop suffering more from pollution.

  • decreased funding for ICE, which has done so much damage that now it has fewer people to arrest or deport.

The government, not the market-place, is the only lever for rebalancing inequities. We need and FY 2021 budget embedded with anti-racist values.

Thank you for your leadership on legislation to protect the environment, undocumented immigrants, to provide COVID relief, and pass HR1. I am calling today to ask you to fight for all of these issues in the FY 2021 budget. Specifically to press for the House bill, which has:

  • budget relief for state and local governments
  • health care costs for COVID treatment, and protections for front-line health workers
  • Medicaid coverage for undocumented Americans, many of whom are working in essential services
  • full funding for the EPA so that BIPOC communities stop suffering more from pollution.

The FY 2021 Senate Appropriations bills are inadequate on several fronts. There is no COVID relief, insufficient funding for the EPA, and too much funding for ICE. I urge you to vote no and press for these changes during negotiations with the House:

  • extended and expanded unemployment coverage
  • budget relief for state and local governments
  • health care costs for COVID treatment, and protections for front-line health workers
  • Medicaid coverage for undocumented Americans, many of whom are working in essential services
  • full funding for the EPA so that BIPOC communities stop suffering more from pollution.
  • decreased funding for ICE, which has done so much damage that now it has fewer people to arrest or deport.

3. Call the House.
