We Must Take Trump’s Nazi-Talk Seriously

QUICK READ: “[W]e pledge to… root out the Communists, Marxists, Fascists, and Radical Left Thugs that live like vermin…and will…destroy America….Our threat is from within.” When Trump employs Nazi-talk alongside plans to round up immigrants in mass detention camps by the millions, we need to take him dead seriously.

BACKGROUND

“In honor of our great Veterans on Veterans Day, we pledge to…root out the Communists, Marxists, Fascists, and Radical Left Thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country, lie, steal, and cheat on Elections, and will do anything possible, whether legally or illegally, to destroy America….Our threat is from within.”  — Donald Trump, 11/11/2023

Trump’s Nazi playbook language was no accident. Rhetoric about vermin, rats, and other subhuman threats from within aims to dehumanize one’s enemies.

When Trump promises to construct huge detention camps for the millions of immigrants he’d deport and to use the Justice Department to take down his political enemies, we should believe him.

Mid-twentieth-century fascists silenced voices in the so-called “lying press” while Trump decries fake news. Fascists banned and burned books, which Trumpists are also doing, and they later banned opposition and political parties, arresting opponents and purging university faculties. These are Trump’s second term agenda.

The 2024 election may be our last chance to save democracy, given Trump’s open embrace of authoritarianism.

Since we cannot rely on the “responsible” press to address these issues head on, our Members of Congress must remind the public of the serious danger posed by this xenophobic demagogue so that Trump remains a one-term President.
