MAGA REPUBLICANS PLAN CUTS TO MEDICAID TO PAY FOR BILLIONAIRE TAX BREAKS

QUICK READ: Trump and the MAGA Republicans are up to their usual Robin Hood-in-reverse scheme, proposing a ‘Big Beautiful’ reconciliation bill that will severely cut the Medicaid program to make room for unnecessary tax breaks for Elon Musk and the wealthiest people on the planet.  These cuts to health care for our disabled, elderly, and poor families come at a time when marginalized communities are already living on the edge of poverty.

BACKGROUND

Medicaid was designed as a free program specifically to help poor people who could not afford insurance and disabled people whom insurance companies would not cover. It’s a federal- and state-funded program that was added to the Social Security Act and signed into law in 1965.  Today, Medicaid covers costs for the working poor, rural hospitals, nursing homes, people with disabilities, and veterans’ mental health, providing health care for over 80 million of America's poorest families, the disabled, and the elderly.

MAGA Republicans’ latest proposal for their ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ would cut between $715 and $900 billion over 10 years through new work and cost-sharing requirements (8-10% of the entire program) to offset Trump’s disastrous trade war and tax breaks to billionaires. The Congressional Budget Office estimates 8.6 million low-income Americans would lose Medicaid coverage as a result.

Cuts to this vital program, combined with the malicious staff layoffs made by the DOGE team, will further undermine an already dysfunctional health care system, leaving our most physically and financially vulnerable citizens to scramble to cover more out-of-pocket expenses or go without care completely.

MAGA Republicans may not care about the blatant inhumanity of these cuts, but they ignore at their peril cascading protests and phone calls from their constituents. We need to keep the pressure on these representatives to protect health care for our most vulnerable citizens and expose the Trump regime’s extreme cruelty.

Although the present focus is on the House, the inhumanity of the MAGA Republicans’ reconciliation bill will eventually come before the Senate. Between now and then, I expect you to continue reminding the American people Taking health care away from children and moms, seniors in nursing homes, and people with disabilities to give tax breaks to those who don’t need them is shameful. We need you to continue using all your legislative and performative skills to keep this disgraceful tradeoff front and center both in Congress and on social media until this farce comes to an end.

Although the present focus is on the House, the inhumanity of your party’s reconciliation bill will eventually come before the Senate. Taking healthcare away from children and moms, seniors in nursing homes, and people with disabilities to give tax breaks to those who don’t need them is shameful. It is well past time for you to denounce this atrocity and work, instead, to protect your constituents’ Medicaid coverage.

MAGA Republicans’ latest tactic for gutting Medicaid calls for shifting many expenses to the states and establishing new work and cost-sharing requirements that would generate between $715 and $900 billions in savings and result in 8.6 million impoverished Americans losing their healthcare entirely. This is completely unacceptable. Using the reconciliation process to take healthcare away from children and moms, seniors in nursing homes, and people with disabilities to give tax breaks to those who don’t need them is shameful. We need you to continue using all your legislative and performative skills to keep this disgraceful tradeoff front and center both in Congress and on social media until this farce comes to an end.
