PRESERVING DEMOCRACY IS FOUNDATIONAL FOR US TO THRIVE

Background

We all deserve to be free to vote, be free from white supremacist violence, be paid a living wage, have access to affordable health care, live on a healthy planet, hold those who harm us accountable, and expect equal justice for all. We need progressive, anti-racist legislation to ensure we all THRIVE, now and in the future.

Central to our well-being is the freedom to choose leaders who promote the common good, rather than their own power and wealth. We are not free to choose our leaders when our votes are suppressed, when congressional and state legislative districts are gerrymandered to ensure one party retains control, when dark money is used to flood us with disinformation, and when corrupt leaders are free from enforceable ethical constraints. We need the For the People Act to protect us from these threats.

We ask Congress to protect our democracy before passing other progressive, anti-racist legislation. We ask Congress to pass the For the People Act (S1), the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (HR4), and the Washington, DC Admission Act (HR/S51) -- with a simple majority, not an impossible 60% of the Senate -- so we and our democracy can THRIVE.

1. Call the Senate.

I'm calling today to thank you again for your leadership to eliminate the filibuster, to ensure progressive, anti-racist legislation to save our democracy and help us THRIVE can be passed by a simple majority in the Senate. After the recess the Senate must pass the For The People Act, The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and the Washington DC Admissions Act.

Script for Sen. Wyden

I am concerned that if the Senate continues to require an impossible supermajority to pass legislation supported by a vast majority of the population, bills already passed by the House will continue to die in the Senate. Democracy rescue legislation is urgent and it is vital that the Senate eliminate the filibuster so legislation can pass by a simple majority of Senators present. If you continue to support filibuster reform, the minority will have the power to obstruct and undermine our democracy and our government's role in helping us THRIVE.

Script for Republican Senators

I support legislation that allows all voters the freedom to vote for the leaders they want. And I want a senator who views government as a means to protect the common good. I am disappointed that your voting history suggests you view government as a means to protect your own power and increase your wealth. I hope that will change in the future.

2. Call the House.
