Actions
have a big impact
Make a two-minute phone call to your U.S. Representative and your U.S. Senators and urge them to take specific action on a timely issue. We provide scripts to make it easy. Just select one of the Actions below to get started.
Why is this so important? Our phone calls fire up our Members of Congress, stiffen their spines, and push them to fight harder. We let them know that we're paying attention – and we have their back when they go out on a limb.Make sure to call your own U.S. Representative and both Senators – they are the ones who represent you!

FRIDAY RECAP: September 3rd, 2021
History is made by those who continue to show up. We will save democracy by persevering. When we get tired of repeating ourselves is about the time others begin listening. Although Congress is now on break, the subjects of this week’s calls--climate change, the debt limit, filibuster reform, and voting rights--are still on the agenda, and our representatives still need to hear from us. It takes all of us calling multiple times, so continue showing up by making one more call this week.

TEXAS’S ABORTION BAN IS A WIN FOR THE RADICALS
Republicans captured 30 state legislatures and they are using them to push through radical laws, like those in Texas. States, including Oregon, have become the frontlines in the war on democracy. It’s time to fight back!

THE DEBT LIMIT MUST BE RAISED OR ELIMINATED
“[I]ncreasing or suspending the debt limit does not increase government spending, nor does it authorize spending for future budget proposals; it simply allows Treasury to pay for previously enacted expenditures. Failure to meet those obligations would cause irreparable harm to the U.S. economy and the livelihoods of all Americans.” Statement from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, August 9, 2021

REAL CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION IS WITHIN REACH. FIGHT FOR IT!
Ida’s catastrophe, and the rest of this summer’s horrifying display of the power of climate change, demand that we act now. Fortunately, real action, backed by real money, is within reach. Woven into the reconciliation and infrastructure bills are projects that will cut US greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. But passage is uncertain.

FRIDAY RECAP: August 27th, 2021
This week the House passed the John Lewis voting act this week. It could end the Supreme Court’s 50 year war on minority voting rights. Next, it heads to the Senate buy bills to protect democracy could die by filibuster. This fight is about one thing, does every citizen have the right to vote or should it be a perk for the privileged? Call your MoC!

THE FILIBUSTER IS AN EXISTENTIAL THREAT TO DEMOCRACY
Why does protecting the right to vote take 60 votes in the Senate, but stacking the Supreme Court takes only 51? It’s the filibuster, of course, which has been weaponized by Mitch McConnell to strengthen the GOP’s minority rule. It’s past time to defang the filibuster so that voting rights and other critical legislation Americans need and want can pass with a simple majority.

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act can reverse the war on voting rights
The right to vote and our confidence in election outcomes are weeks away from being either shredded or saved. States, emboldened by the Supreme Court, are actively suppressing votes. Democrats will advance their last-ditch attempt to save the franchise and democracy: The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

FRIDAY RECAP: August 20th, 2021
Nothing will be done to slow climate change unless we elect people who understand the crisis. But in 30 states across the country, Republicans are rigging the 2022 elections. They have also weaponized the filibuster to block solutions. Maybe Afghanistan has something to teach progressives. Check out this week’s Daily Actions.

THE FILIBUSTER PERVERTS OUR GOVERNMENT. IT MUST GO NOW.
“Millions of young people mobilized last election cycle. Our energy and hard work helped elect Democrats to the White House, Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. We got involved to make change and the filibuster is the biggest obstacle to realizing that change. Democracy is unraveling before our eyes and we urge you and the Senate Democratic caucus to eliminate the filibuster to protect our future and advance the bold agenda we are all fighting for.” Letter from 24+ youth organizations to Sen. Schumer, July 29, 2021

SEN. MERKLEY DEMANDS CLIMATE PRIORITIES IN RECONCILIATION BILL
Climate change. We have a real shot at making a difference right now. The details of the massive infrastructure (which has broad bipartisan support) are being worked out now. Call your MOC and tell them what you want in the bill. Then call tomorrow.

THE AFGHAN LESSON FOR US
The failure in Afghanistan is a lesson that abandoning the essential decision-making tools of our civilization can produce a human catastrophe. The same approach has hardened into the strategy now used by the GOP in its war on democracy.

FRIDAY RECAP: August 13th, 2021
This week, it became clear that the GOP is close to winning its war on democracy. We must continue to demand our Members of Congress shield democracy from the nationwide campaign to rip away our freedoms. History is made by those who continue to show up. We save democracy by persevering. When we get tired of repeating ourselves is when others begin listening, so we must keep at it.

TOMORROW, THE GOP begins more EXTREME GERRYMANDERING
“If we don’t pass the For the People Act, the GOP is going to gerrymander their way to
a House majority--and they may never give it up.” Robert Reich, Obama’s Secretary of Labor
“Tick tock, folks. Kill the filibuster. Pass the For the People Act. End gerrymandering. And do it now. Or we all know what’s coming.” Ezra Levin, Indivisible founder

CONSTITUTIONAL SCHOLAR IS “SCARED S***LESS!!”
The “patriots” -- from the insurrectionists, the sham intellectuals and billionaires fighting to “Save America” -- are close to destroying our democratic government by replacing the will of the majority with the rule of a minority.

FRIDAY RECAP: August 6th, 2021
This week, it became clear that the GOP is winning its war on democracy. We must continue to demand our Members of Congress shield democracy from the nationwide campaign to rip away our freedoms. History is made by those who continue to show up. We save democracy by persevering. When we get tired of repeating ourselves is when others begin listening, so we must keep at it.
Why call your Members of Congress
Members of Congress have told us repeatedly that our calls matter. When they meet with their colleagues in Congress, they say "I'm getting swamped with calls about this illegal power grab. We need to take action."
If you're represented by Democrats: They are our best defense in Washington DC. They can throw sand in the gears of the Trump regime by using tools such as parliamentary procedures. And they have the power to call attention to particular issues via press, social media, special events. In short: our elected officials have power, and we must push them to wield it.
If you're represented by Republicans: Our calls let them know just how unpopular their actions are. We make them nervous, even if they don't show it. We make it hard for them to take actions that hurt Americans.
Calling tips
State your name, your zip code or neighborhood, and why you're calling
Stick to one issue per call
Don't worry about getting pulled into a debate -- the staffer will simply document your message.
Be respectful. The person on the other end of the line is likely a staffer who handles numerous calls daily. Being polite makes your message more likely to be heard and taken seriously.
Use personal stories when possible. When you share how an issue affects you personally, or why it matters to you, your message is more likely to resonate and be remembered.
