Actions

have a big impact

Make a two-minute phone call to your U.S. Representative and your U.S. Senators and urge them to take specific action on a timely issue. We provide scripts to make it easy. Just select one of the Actions below to get started.

Why is this so important?  Our phone calls fire up our Members of Congress, stiffen their spines, and push them to fight harder. We let them know that we're paying attention – and we have their back when they go out on a limb.Make sure to call your own U.S. Representative and both Senators – they are the ones who represent you!

INVEST IN PEOPLE NOT WEAPONS

“The annual Pentagon budget hovers over $750 billion annually, twice that of the much debated Build Back Better Act that costs about $350 billion annually. . . .And the Build Back Better Act is PAID for, unlike the Pentagon’s budget (which we don’t even audit!)” Rep. Mark Pocan’s tweet, Oct. 3, 2021

THE GOP IS RIGGING ELECTIONS TO SOLIDIFY WHITE SUPREMACY

In state after state, the GOP is sabotaging future elections by blocking non-white citizens from the voting booth and rigging the vote-counting system. In Congress, bills to overturn those unconstitutional laws are blocked by the GOP using the filibuster loophole to thwart the Senate majority. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court continues its 20-year effort to maintain white supremacy.

FRIDAY RECAP: Oct. 22, 2021

This week, as Democrats begin negotiating with themselves about what belongs in Build Back Better, we identified the questions we need to answer in telling our MoCs what needs to be included in the final product. We also called on our Senators to pass voting rights legislation, with a filibuster carve-out if necessary, and we called out the Senator who, with his corporate donors, is trying to destroy the planet. To ensure these bills pass, we must continue calling Congress.

The GOP is blocking millions from voting in 2022

The John Lewis Voting Rights Bill and Freedom to Vote Act will go a long way to protect our democracy and blunt Republican efforts to block Democratic voters. Thoughtful conservative Republicans, such as Bill Krystal and Governor Christine Whitman have spoken out loudly against these authoritarian tactics. By contrast, Democrats in the Senate have been paralyzed. They must push our Senators to pass both bills.

FRIDAY RECAP: Oct. 15, 2021

This week, as critics worried the $3.5 trillion care bill would create an “entitlement society,” we identified who are the freeloaders living off government handouts — oil companies, the pharmaceutical industry, the ultra rich, and more moochers. Then with the anti-democrats seeking to control elections, we called for the Democrats in Congress to restore the guardrails Trump destroyed to protect the country from another would-be dictator. And we reported that, thanks solely to AT&T, we have another extremist propaganda machine, One America News network.

HOLD AT&T RESPONSIBLE FOR FINANCING DANGEROUS PROPAGANDA

The One America news network grew as it endorsed white nationalism, pro-Trump propaganda, and deadly misinformation about coronavirus. Viewership exploded when the network claimed falsely that “treasonous radical Democrats” stole the 2020 election and without a doubt, OAN played a significant role in provoking the January 6 insurrection. We demand that Congress hold hearings to investigate OAN/AT&T.

WILL CONGRESS REIN IN PRESIDENTIAL ABUSES AND PREVENT FUTURE COUPS?

“Trumpism with or without Trump remains a peril, because his unprecedented appetite for authoritarianism has spread to his followers. . . .The continued viability of the United States as a constitutional republic requires both that seditionists be brought to justice and that we. . .repair the weaknesses in our system that they exposed.”

Laurence Tribe, Professor of Constitutional Law, Harvard University

WILL BUILD BACK BETTER CREATE AN “ENTITLEMENT SOCIETY”?

The Build Back Better bill would take from the rich and help the rest of us. But America’s biggest welfare recipients, the rich and powerful, hate that idea. So they have dispatched their lobbyists to push their paid-for politicians to defeat the bill whose sole purpose is to help make America a more broadly prosperous nation.

FRIDAY RECAP: Oct. 8, 2021

The destruction of the global economy was postponed this week. Senate Republicans agreed to move the deadline for raising the debt limit from Oct. 18 to Dec. 3. Meanwhile, the Build Back Better bill — which would provide a range of needed social benefits and climate actions — is still in limbo as Dems wrangle over something but it’s not exactly clear what opponents want. And Trump holdovers in high government offices, like the IRS and the Post Office, continue Trump’s war on democracy. Stay ahead of the news and be fully informed with Indivisible Oregon’s Daily Actions.

STOP THE GOP FROM DESTROYING OUR ECONOMY

Unless the borrowing limit is raised or eliminated, on October 18 our inability to pay our debts will trigger a deep recession here and a global economic catastrophe. Until now, this threat has always been scary enough to motivate Republicans to compromise. Now, the catastrophe caucus plans only a filibuster--just another example of the tyranny of the minority.

FRIDAY RECAP: Oct. 1, 2021

It was a chaotic week in Congress. If you were reading our Daily Actions, you were well informed when issues arose. It began with the GOP's attempted sacrifice of our economy. Then, Wednesday, we supported Progressives and urged our Representatives to vote “no” on the infrastructure bill. And yesterday, we asked you to urge your Members of Congress to back the Freedom To Vote Act, because if certain people are denied the vote, we will be subject to the tyranny of the minority.

Why call your Members of Congress

Members of Congress have told us repeatedly that our calls matter. When they meet with their colleagues in Congress, they say "I'm getting swamped with calls about this illegal power grab. We need to take action."

If you're represented by Democrats: They are our best defense in Washington DC. They can throw sand in the gears of the Trump regime by using tools such as parliamentary procedures. And they have the power to call attention to particular issues via press, social media, special events. In short: our elected officials have power, and we must push them to wield it.

If you're represented by Republicans: Our calls let them know just how unpopular their actions are. We make them nervous, even if they don't show it. We make it hard for them to take actions that hurt Americans.

Calling tips

  • State your name, your zip code or neighborhood, and why you're calling

  • Stick to one issue per call

  • Don't worry about getting pulled into a debate -- the staffer will simply document your message.

  • Be respectful. The person on the other end of the line is likely a staffer who handles numerous calls daily. Being polite makes your message more likely to be heard and taken seriously.

  • Use personal stories when possible. When you share how an issue affects you personally, or why it matters to you, your message is more likely to resonate and be remembered.
