Make an impact in 2 minutes
have a big impact
Make a two-minute phone call to your U.S. Representative and your U.S. Senators and urge them to take specific action on a timely issue. We provide scripts to make it easy. Just select one of the Actions below to get started.
Why is this so important? Our phone calls fire up our Members of Congress, stiffen their spines, and push them to fight harder. We let them know that we're paying attention – and we have their back when they go out on a limb. Make sure to call your own U.S. Representative and both Senators – they are the ones who represent you!
GO BIG AND BOLD ON INFRASTRUCTURE
We must convince Congress to go big and bold to build back our economy and restructure it to benefit us all, whether a version of Biden’s American Jobs Plan (AJP) is enacted through regular order and his American Families Plan (AFP) through reconciliation, or whether they are consolidated and passed through reconciliation after McConnell sabotages the bipartisan compromise.
Show Up to Save Democracy
History is made by those who show up. We will save democracy by persevering. When we get tired of repeating ourselves is about the time others begin listening. It takes all of us calling multiple times, so practice self-care and continue showing up to save democracy.
THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS MOMENT
Republicans are well on their way to overthrowing democracy, which will allow the GOP -- the party of white men -- to control the federal government through minority rule, leaving us a whisper away from Trump-like rule of unrestrained racism, government corruption, erosion of public health, and violent rightwing extremism, all while perverting the rule of law and truth itself.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PUSH FOR
What happens after the Congressional recess depends on our actions over the next two weeks. We are the ones making history. Join us to take action.
YOU DON’T GET WHAT YOU DON’T FIGHT FOR
Our calls and activism in support of S.1 gave us a victory this past week. What happens after the Congressional recess depends on our actions over the next two weeks. We are the ones making history. Join us to take action. LFG.
FOR THE PEOPLE ACT IS THE VACCINE AGAINST MINORITY RULE
“The people did not give Democrats the House, Senate and White House to compromise with insurrectionists. Abolish the filibuster so we can do the people’s work.”
--Representative Ayanna Pressley, Democrat of Massachusetts
Obstruction is Not Bipartisanship
Yesterday's Senate actions on Washington, D.C. statehood (S.51) and For the People (S1) demonstrated yet again that obstruction is neither deliberation nor bipartisanship. Republican opposition centered on the same racist tropes their 1870 predecessors used to disenfranchise freed slaves. We stand on the shoulders of those civil rights activists who have opposed them before us and raise our voices together in support of both bills.
STOP GOP ELECTION SABOTAGE
Republicans’ war on democracy is now aimed at sabotaging America’s elections by passing state voter suppression laws, and ending nonpartisan election management. The For the People Act is democracy’s best defense. The Senate must crush the filibuster, pass the FTPA, and save democracy.
Obstruction is Not Deliberation
This week is a big week for saving democracy. Our Members of Congress need to stand strong and eliminate the filibuster, or at least exempt pro-democracy legislation from it -- so Republicans can't stall S.1's passage past redistricting deadlines. We can help by committing to call our MoCs today and tomorrow.
The Senate Filibuster is Unconstitutional
The Constitution is based on the principle of majority rule. Whenever the Framers required a supermajority, they said so. Thus, no such requirement for the passage of general legislation exists. We ask our Senators to request a ruling from Vice-President Harris that the silent filibuster, which effectively prevents popular legislation from ever receiving a Senate vote, is unconstitutional. This will force the Senate to determine how to protect both the principle of majority rule and the minority’s right to be heard.
Regulate Guns & Policing
“I am so tired of archaic Senate procedure being used as an excuse to do nothing while people in our communities are dying (Pulse survivor)." Eliminating the filibuster is key to passing much needed and popular legislation to reign in gun violence and police brutality, build infrastructure, and save our democracy. Our grassroots support remains essential, so today we ask our senators to make Republicans vote against bills their constituents want and thank our representatives for already accomplishing that.
S.1 STOPS BILLIONAIRES FROM BUYING ELECTIONS
On January 8, Republican operatives learned that trying to stop the For the People Act would be a waste of money. That’s because it was extremely popular, even among conservative voters because it would: “Stop billionaires from buying elections.” So the GOP disguised their opposition with a billionaire-funded nationwide campaign of voter suppression. It diverted attention and gave cover to Joe Manchin and his Republican and Democratic colleagues alike, all dependent on dark money.
ABOLISH THE FILIBUSTER. PASS S1. SAVE DEMOCRACY
Abolish the Filibuster. Pass S1. Save Democracy. It took months to defeat the filibuster to pass the 1960s Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. Next week the Senate votes on the For the People Act. Just as we turned out in record numbers in the middle of a pandemic, we come together now to abolish the filibuster and pass the For the People Act. Join us. Save democracy.
Pass Wealth Taxes
We can have democracy in this country, or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both.
—Louis D. Brandeis
In a Democracy the Minority Does Not Rule
The Senate will be in recess for all but 35 days over the next three months. We must insist that our MoCs forcefully inform Majority Leader Schumer and President Biden that the only way to demonstrate that Republicans’ real agenda is delay and obstruction is for Schumer to force them to employ talking filibusters. Simultaneously, Biden must use his bully pulpit to call for the filibuster’s elimination. Only then will we have any chance of preserving our democracy.
Why call your Members of Congress
Members of Congress have told us repeatedly that our calls matter. When they meet with their colleagues in Congress, they say "I'm getting swamped with calls about this illegal power grab. We need to take action."
If you're represented by Democrats: They are our best defense in Washington DC. They can throw sand in the gears of the Trump regime by using tools such as parliamentary procedures. And they have the power to call attention to particular issues via press, social media, special events. In short: our elected officials have power, and we must push them to wield it.
If you're represented by Republicans: Our calls let them know just how unpopular their actions are. We make them nervous, even if they don't show it. We make it hard for them to take actions that hurt Americans.
Calling tips
State your name, your zip code or neighborhood, and why you're calling
Stick to one issue per call
Don't worry about getting pulled into a debate -- the staffer will simply document your message.
Be respectful. The person on the other end of the line is likely a staffer who handles numerous calls daily. Being polite makes your message more likely to be heard and taken seriously.
Use personal stories when possible. When you share how an issue affects you personally, or why it matters to you, your message is more likely to resonate and be remembered.
