HR/S1’S ETHICAL STANDARDS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE
Restoring ethical behavior and trust in government demands maintaining ethical standards. An ethics violation is an alarm that self-interest is more important to a politician than serving the public good. We need the For the People Act that toughens government ethical codes.
WE DESERVE AN ETHICAL SUPREME COURT – THE FOR THE PEOPLE ACT HELPS US GET THERE
The Supreme Court makes decisions that affect us all. We deserve justices whose decisions are based on Constitutional law, free from conflicts of interest. The nine justices of the Supreme Court are the only judges in the United States not bound by a code of ethical conduct. The For the People Act addresses this.
FUNDING CANDIDATES WHO WILL WORK FOR THE PEOPLE
We deserve to have our voices heard in government. We deserve inclusive access to free and fair elections and elected officials who work for the common good. The For the People Act of 2021 (HR1/S1) would enact federal legislation to protect our right to be heard in elections and to expect elected officials and their appointees to govern for all of us.
FREE THE FEC
We have a way to make free and fair elections much more fair. For years, the Federal Election Commission has been dysfunctional, allowing obvious violations of the campaign finance laws to go unchecked. The For the People Act will again enable the FEC to conduct investigations and audits, hold hearings, issue regulations, and force disclosure.
THE FOR THE PEOPLE ACT WILL HELP PROTECT OUR ELECTIONS FROM THE INFLUENCE OF BIG MONEY
Big money in elections is corrupting and anti-democratic. The For The People Act (HR1/S1) has provisions to strengthen our election finance laws. It protects our democracy from being smothered by big money donors who have no accountability or transparency. HR1/S1 has broad support among average Americans, and our representatives in Congress will listen to us when we call and ask them to work for its passage.
HR1/S1 Would Reform Campaign Financing
The Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision increased to obscene levels the amount of money in politics. But Congress can limit the decision’s impact. Urge our Members of Congress pass the For The People Act.
WE DESERVE A CAMPAIGN SYSTEM THAT IS ABOUT VOTERS – NOT MONEY
Campaign finance abuse, lack of transparency/oversight into campaign finance, has created a corrupt system where domestic and foreign money holds the power over elected officials – at the expense of the voter. The For the People Act takes steps to reform, increase transparency, and decrease corruption in campaign finance – giving back power to the people and the voters.

America deserves an inclusive democracy where all can can make themselves heard, all ballots have equal worth, and our needs take precedence over special interests’. For the People Act (H.R.1/S.1) is the necessary antidote—making illegal Republicans’ anti-enfranchisement tactics. It creates the infrastructure to permanently bolster voters’ influence.

The For the People Act restores federal oversight to end unconstitutional voter suppression. It requires states to adopt independent redistricting commissions so we choose our MoCs. Senator Merkley said, “Everyone who believes in our Constitutional vision should support reforms that make sure the American people are able to vote.”
LET EVERYONE VOTE
The 2020 election showed the most powerful person in the country is the American voter. Voters ejected Trump from the White House and dethroned Mitch McConnell. Democrats are now in control and have the opportunity to secure an American ideal: that everyone eligible can vote. The bills to do that are the “For the People” and John Lewis Voting Rights Acts.

Indivisible Oregon is excited to introduce our For the People Act (HR1/S1) campaign. HR1/S1 reforms and strengthens our democracy. The past 4 years underscore the need to pass it asap. Our Oregon Democratic Members of Congress all support it, and they need our help to take the leadership role Oregon's voting system provides and get this bill passed.
CONGRESS MUST PROTECT IMMIGRANTS AND THEIR FAMILIES
Undocumented immigrants, half of whom are essential workers on the front lines risking both infection and deportation, have been largely excluded from prior relief packages. Biden proposes to correct that but his bill leaves too many families excluded.
BIDEN’S PLAN TO EXPAND HEALTH INSURANCE
With Democrats in control, we have an opportunity to help 15 million people acquire health insurance. President Biden is pursuing that goal because healthcare should not be another luxury of the well-off, but a humane response in a time of great need.
Democrats Want to Rescue Children from Poverty
All children deserve a safe and healthy start. Yet, the financial impact of the pandemic has increased child poverty, furthering already existing racial disparities. Biden's Child Tax Credit would reduce both child poverty and racial disparities, and Monday Rep. Neal introduced a bill to expedite payments to families with children.
Why call your Members of Congress
Members of Congress have told us repeatedly that our calls matter. When they meet with their colleagues in Congress, they say "I'm getting swamped with calls about this illegal power grab. We need to take action."
If you're represented by Democrats: They are our best defense in Washington DC. They can throw sand in the gears of the Trump regime by using tools such as parliamentary procedures. And they have the power to call attention to particular issues via press, social media, special events. In short: our elected officials have power, and we must push them to wield it.
If you're represented by Republicans: Our calls let them know just how unpopular their actions are. We make them nervous, even if they don't show it. We make it hard for them to take actions that hurt Americans.

State your name, your zip code or neighborhood, and why you're calling
Stick to one issue per call
Don't worry about getting pulled into a debate -- the staffer will simply document your message.
Be respectful. The person on the other end of the line is likely a staffer who handles numerous calls daily. Being polite makes your message more likely to be heard and taken seriously.
Use personal stories when possible. When you share how an issue affects you personally, or why it matters to you, your message is more likely to resonate and be remembered.
