A NOTE TO THE FISH
We are the guardians of America’s democracy. Ours is the world’s longest-running experiment in self-government, an ingenious mechanism for improving life. But our democracy’s survival is not automatic. We protect and strengthen our democracy by fighting to extend its privileges to everyone.
WE MUST HAVE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR ATTACKING DEMOCRACY
There must be accountability for attacking democracy. Democrats must see the GOP’s feigning compromise for what it is - wielding super minority rule to keep power. Democrats must help all Americans, whatever their party, by passing the vital legislation we all need.

WE MUST TAKE BACK THE COURTS
Last week, a Trump-appointed district judge struck down the CDC’s nationwide eviction moratorium, placing at risk the 12 million Americans behind in their rent. This is just one example of how the GOP-packed courts will subvert Biden’s agenda. Legislation to protect us and our democracy will not survive unless we take back the courts by passing the Judiciary Act of 2021, dramatically increasing lower court judgeships, and nominating and confirming judges committed to civil and human rights.
Police Reform in Congress and Oregon
We need to push again for Senate passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. But the heaviest lifting on police reform must happen at the state and local levels. Take action with us and tell your Oregon senator to support a sunshine bill to let the public see police misconduct records.
ENABLING MASS SHOOTINGS, THE GOP AIMS AT DEMOCRACY
House Dems passed two bills to stem mass shootings. Although the public supports such measures and democracy demands Congress follow the will of the people, the GOP vowed to fight any gun measure. We need gun controls to save lives and restore faith in democracy.
Pass & Protect Pro-Democracy Legislation
Most voters want national standards for how we vote and leaders who want us to vote. Until the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and the Judiciary Act of 2021are passed by the Senate and signed by President Biden, disinformation, gerrymandering, and other racist voter suppression tactics will continue to expand while SCOTUS hands down racist, anti-voter decisions. Be sure your senators hear your voice in support of passing pro-democracy legislation now.
FAMILIES DESERVE COMPREHENSIVE INFRASTRUCTURE
To thrive, Americans need quality infrastructure that includes education, child care, medical care, and food. President Biden, VP Harris, and Congressional Democrats are working to deliver this infrastructure with the American Families Plan. Call our members of Congress and urge them to help us thrive by passing the most progressive version possible of the American Families Plan.
Congressional Oversight & the Census
We deserve a democracy in which resources and representation are allocated based on an accurate counting of the population. Yet the previous administration gave us no reason to trust they even attempted to fully count BIPOC, immigrant, and poor communities. We call on Congress to exercise its oversight responsibility and ensure the 2020 Census was accurate.
Republicans Are Passing State Anti-voting Laws While For The People Act Sits in Congress
Most of us believe that voters pick our leaders -- our leaders do not get to pick their voters. Yet, this year Republicans are mounting the greatest attack on voting since Reconstruction was dismantled. We need all hands on deck in Congress to stop the steal. End the filibuster, pass the For The People Act and protect our freedom to vote.

Demand Justice has launched a multifaceted campaign to urge Democratic Senators and Representatives to co-sponsor and work for the passage of the Judiciary Act of 2021, with the goal of pressuring Majority Leader Schumer and House Speaker Pelosi to bring it up for a vote in the Senate and the House. One facet involves contacting small donors who have contributed to Democratic campaigns urging them to tell the recipient of their donations about the importance of this legislation. Why call your Members of Congress
Members of Congress have told us repeatedly that our calls matter. When they meet with their colleagues in Congress, they say "I'm getting swamped with calls about this illegal power grab. We need to take action."
If you're represented by Democrats: They are our best defense in Washington DC. They can throw sand in the gears of the Trump regime by using tools such as parliamentary procedures. And they have the power to call attention to particular issues via press, social media, special events. In short: our elected officials have power, and we must push them to wield it.
If you're represented by Republicans: Our calls let them know just how unpopular their actions are. We make them nervous, even if they don't show it. We make it hard for them to take actions that hurt Americans.

State your name, your zip code or neighborhood, and why you're calling
Stick to one issue per call
Don't worry about getting pulled into a debate -- the staffer will simply document your message.
Be respectful. The person on the other end of the line is likely a staffer who handles numerous calls daily. Being polite makes your message more likely to be heard and taken seriously.
Use personal stories when possible. When you share how an issue affects you personally, or why it matters to you, your message is more likely to resonate and be remembered.
