STOP THE $20 BILLION BAILOUT OF ARGENTINA, CRONY CAPITALISM AT ITS WORST

QUICK READ:   Why would the US government use $20 billion in taxpayer funds to bail out Argentina, a right-wing government with a decades-long history of corruption and fiscal mismanagement, when it’s unwilling to use these funds to benefit the American people ? To protect Treasury Secretary Bessert’s billionaire hedge-fund buddies, of course. Congress must put an end to this crony capitalism scam now.

BACKGROUND

In late September, just days before Trump and his MAGA lackeys shut down the government, claiming they couldn’t afford to continue the ACA subsidies set to expire at the end of the year, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, at the urging of his longtime friend Rob Citrone, a hedge-fund billionaire who’d invested heavily in Argentine assets, announced a $20 billion taxpayer-funded rescue package for Argentina, whose farmers are replacing American soybean producers in the China market.

Why would the US government give this lifeline to the right-wing Argentina government with a decades-long history of corruption and fiscal mismanagement, that defaulted 9 times on its sovereign debt?

Because Trump considered its right-wing, corrupt president, Javier Milei, a natural ally? Because Treasury Secretary’ Scott Bessent’s hedge fund buddies needed US taxpayer money to prop up the Argentine peso just long enough for them to sell their Argentine assets at inflated prices?

While Americans are struggling to buy groceries, members of the military go unpaid, and millions of government workers are laid off, Trump and his cronies are treating our tax dollars like Monopoly money, forcing every American to pay $59 to further enrich the ultra-wealthy –just as Trump’s Murder reconciliation bill did.

On Oct. 9—nine days into the shutdown—right after the $20 billion lifeline was finalized, Democrats introduced the No Argentina Bailout Act, which would prohibit this bailout from going forward.

Instead of prolonging the Trump-imposed shutdown, this $20 billion could then be used to cover half the $35 billion annual estimate of maintaining the enhanced ACA subsidies for 24 million Americans.

ACTION One: Call the Senate.

Script for Oregon Senators

SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753

My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

Thank you for continuing to fight for America’s healthcare needs and to prevent Republicans from handing Trump blank checks. While Trump and his MAGA cronies claim the government cannot afford to pay for healthcare, they have no trouble finding $20 billion to bailout Argentina to protect Wall Street banks and Treasury Secretary Bessent’s billionaire friends who unwisely invested there. To prevent this unconscionable bailout, being funded by taxpayer dollars, from going forward, when you return to Washington, please also co-sponsor the No Argentina Bailout Act and push for its passage.

Script for Republican Senators

D.C switchboard: 202-224-3121

My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], [state], [zip code].

Senator Grassley is very upset Trump is using $20 billion in taxpayer funds to bail out Argentina, whose farmers are taking away our soybean producers’ biggest market (China), and you should be too. You can best protect your farmer constituents by opposing Trump’s tariff spree and voting for passage of the No Argentina Bailout Act when you return to Washington. It is also past time to negotiate with Democrats to protect your constituents’ healthcare needs.

ACTION TWO: Call the House.
