Sometimes the most important actions are the simplest.

Over the years, I've volunteered for candidates I believed in by knocking on doors, making calls, and talking with voters. In one Washington governor's race, I helped three supporters cast ballots who otherwise might not have voted. The election was ultimately decided by just 133 votes. In another race, and even in a local city council contest decided by only 39 votes, small volunteer efforts made a measurable difference.

We are just nine days away from the midterm election. I can tell because it is impossible to keep up with the campaign donation requests flooding my inbox, candidates are holding their final debates, and Trump is spreading lies and hateful rhetoric across the country while sending DHS agents to invade the home of a Democratic congressional representative. Despite this environment, the American people are not remaining silent. They are showing up in record numbers to vote for candidates who will hold corrupt politicians accountable and pass policies that improve their lives.

The most fateful parliamentary election in German history occurred on March 5, 1933. It was an election rigged by Hitler, and the Nazis won it. Since entering his second term as president, Donald Trump has been busy trying to rig our midterm elections, just two weeks away. What Hitler accomplished through terror and state power, Trump is attempting through intimidation, manipulation of institutions, and a relentless effort to undermine the legitimacy of any vote he cannot control.

Many people; especially brand new voters, feel hesitant about voting. They look at a ballot full of imperfect choices and think, I don’t want to vote for any of them. It’s a familiar feeling. When politics feels chaotic, overwhelming, or discouraging, stepping back can seem like the safest option.

But choosing not to vote doesn’t remove you from the outcome. It simply removes your voice from the decision.

In his scheme to subvert midterm elections, the White House seems to be taking its cue from 1933 Germany.

Herding political opponents into prisons and concentration camps, suspending civil liberties, and sending SA thugs to destroy newsrooms and beat up journalists were among the means used by Adolf Hitler to game Germany’s parliamentary election of March 5, 1933, won by the Nazis.

Throughout history, people have taken to the streets not because it was easy, but because it was necessary. In Warsaw, hundreds of thousands marched to defend their democracy and reverse years of backsliding. In places where protest has been crushed–where intimidation, arrests and fear silence dissent–the cost of losing that freedom is felt in every home, every family, every future.

The New York Times has a massive, almost hegemonic influence on the political discourse among liberals in America.

As I write this, we are just 28 days away from the midterm elections. This election will be a nail-biter. Not only must we focus on winning votes, but we must also remain vigilant against efforts to reject, invalidate, or otherwise interfere with those votes. It is clear from both past and current actions that anti-democratic forces, including some Republican leaders and elected officials, have repeatedly sought to suppress voter participation and cast doubt on election results that are unfavorable to them.

The Supreme Court may have blocked Trump’s latest attempt to interfere with mail ballots, but the threat to fair elections is still burning at the local level. Across the country, especially in critical swing states, Republican officials have been quietly stacking election boards with election‑deniers people willing to twist rules, weaponize procedures, and sabotage the very system they’re supposed to protect.

American women clawed their way into democracy. Our foremothers didn’t fight for comfort or convenience. They fought for dignity, for visibility, for the fundamental right to be counted. When the Declaration of Independence proclaimed that “all men are created equal,” it didn’t mean all men, and it certainly didn’t mean any women. So women rose.
