This Week Shapes the Future

Welcome, dear readers!

We are just nine days away from the midterm election. I can tell because it is impossible to keep up with the campaign donation requests flooding my inbox, candidates are holding their final debates, and Trump is spreading lies and hateful rhetoric across the country while sending DHS agents to invade the home of a Democratic congressional representative. Despite this environment, the American people are not remaining silent. They are showing up in record numbers to vote for candidates who will hold corrupt politicians accountable and pass policies that improve their lives.

But, friends, I am receiving warnings from credible sources that Republicans, fueled by the money of wealthy individuals, corporations, and tech magnates with much to lose, are gaining momentum in these final days of the campaign. So I am asking myself, and I am asking you, to think about how it would feel and what it would mean for your family, your community, and all Americans if Republicans prevail.

With that sobering thought in mind, I ask you to join me in resolving to do one more thing this week to help ensure that we, the People, get the leaders we deserve. There are still many meaningful ways to get involved: donating to trusted GOTV organizations, signing up for a phone-banking or canvassing shift, helping someone complete a ballot, or simply reaching out to everyone in your circle to remind them what is at stake in this election and encourage them to make their voices heard by voting.

We have an opportunity, one that may not come again, to reshape our government and continue the project our founders began 250 years ago: creating a country in which every person is treated equally, has an equal voice in deciding who governs us, and can live a life of dignity regardless of wealth or social standing. Our current Republican leaders do not share that vision, nor do they seem to care about it. Time and again, they have shown their disdain for it. We must send a message, loud and clear, that they work for us, and when they ignore our suffering and our needs, we have the right to fire them.

Dear friends, simply put: Please vote, and get others to vote with you, as though your lives and the lives of future generations depend on it. What we do today will determine whether we continue to be ruled by a corrupt and callous few or reclaim the constitutional power we were promised to govern ourselves. Time is running out, and we must move as quickly as we can, using every resource available to us, to cross the finish line.

Together, we will do it.
