Why 2026 Demands Our Voice, Our Vote, and Our Courage
As the 2026 midterm elections approach, one message is becoming impossible to ignore: young people care deeply about the future of our country and are ready to make a difference. Recent research shows that while 62% of Gen Z believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction, they are far from apathetic. In fact, 89% say they are willing to vote, 88% are willing to discuss issues with family and friends, and many are active through petitions, advocacy, and community action.
What matters most to young voters is not political party labels but real-life concerns. The economy, rising cost of living, housing affordability, and healthcare dominate their priorities. Yet many young people face barriers that make participation difficult. Confusing registration processes, inconsistent voting rules, misinformation, transportation challenges, and limited access to clear, nonpartisan information often prevent them from connecting the issues they care about with the choices on their ballot.
This should concern all of us.
Democracy depends on participation. When young voters are excluded, discouraged, or disengaged, our government becomes less representative of the people it serves. Gen Z is the most diverse generation in American history, and their voices bring new ideas, perspectives, and solutions to challenges that will shape our future. If they do not participate, decisions about their future may be made without them, weakening the very foundation of democratic representation.
The good news is that young people are ready to lead. They are organizing, educating their peers, and demanding a system that reflects fairness, inclusion, and opportunity. But they cannot do it alone.
We all have a role to play. Encourage a young person to register and vote. Share reliable information. Offer transportation to the a ballot box. Talk about the issues that matter. Listen to young voices and help connect their concerns to civic action.
The future of our democracy is not guaranteed. It depends on whether each generation chooses to participate and be heard. In 2026, let us stand with young voters, strengthen their voice, and help ensure that democracy remains vibrant, representative, and strong for generations to come.
