QUICK READ: On November 26, a vetted Afghan asylee, who’d worked with CIA forces in Afghanistan for a decade, shot two National Guard members deployed in D.C. in violation of a court order. In response, Trump immediately halted all asylum decisions, suspended all Afghan immigration requests, and paused migration from all Third World countries—turning this isolated incident into a national crisis that could only be cured by “remigration,” a Nazi-era term long used by white nationalists as a euphemism for ethnic cleansing.

BACKGROUND
On November 26, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a vetted Afghan asylee who’d killed for CIA forces in Afghanistan, shot two West Virginia National Guard members deployed in D.C. to support Trump’s mass deportation agenda, who should have been sent home after the deployment was found illegal by a federal court.
Lakanewal and his family were part of the first wave of 76,000 Afghans prioritized for resettlement because of their work with US forces. He would have been vetted by the CIA in Afghanistan, both before and after he landed, and before being granted asylum in April 2025.
In a Thanksgiving Day rant, Trump, rather than comforting the victims or bemoaning the easy availability of weapons, used incendiary rhetoric and bigoted fearmongering to turn this isolated incident into a national crisis curable only by “remigration”—a Nazi-era term used by white nationalists like Stephen Miller as a euphemism for ethnic cleansing. In pursuit of this outcome, Trump paused all asylum decisions, suspended all Afghan immigration, ordered green card reviews for individuals from 19 countries, threatened to end migration from “Third World countries” and to revoke naturalized citizens’ citizenship, and randomly attacked Minnesota Somalis, Somalia, Governor Walz, and Rep. Ilhan Omar.
To exclude an entire nationality or region from the US based on one individual’s crime is ludicrous, as would be penalizing all juveniles because of a school shooting, or all white people for the Georgia church massacre. Under Trump’s reasoning, one ICE agent’s involvement in a sex-trafficking ring requires ICE’s disbanding—not a bad idea
Instead, Trump should admit this entire tragedy could have been averted had he not needlessly and illegally deployed the National Guard to DC.
