Love Thy Neighbor: The Murder of Renee Nicole Good

QUICK READ:   As militarized, masked raids on civilian neighborhoods expand, civilian casualties are increasing without accountability. ICE agents are not de-escalating situations. Instead, they’re increasing bloodshed through reckless, cruel, masked paramilitary fear-stoking. Intimidation is not a tactic; it is the whole point.  Renee Good was neither the beginning nor the end of this violence. Congress must intervene.

CONTENTS:

BACKGROUND

On January 7, Renee Good was exercising her rights and looking out for her neighbors when ICE agent, Jonathan Ross, approached her car and shot her 3 times in the face.

Her last words: “That’s fine dude. I’m not mad at you.”

His: “Fucking bitch.”

After this cold-blooded murder, ICE agents didn’t call 911, blocked a nearby doctor from providing  emergency assistance, prevented the arriving ambulance from reaching Good, and then fled the crime scene—all  in defiance of DHS protocol.

What does “love thy neighbor” mean when MAGA Republicans speak of “Christian values” out of one side of their mouths while completely disregarding the humanity of those offering love and assistance to their neighbors?

Just moments after Good’s murder, our corrupt administration was already creating lies to blame the victim. Kristi Noem, DHS Secretary, called Good a “domestic terrorist” without a shred of evidence. Donald Trump doubled down on Noem’s lies, claiming Good “violently, willfully, and viciously” threatened agents with her car despite numerous contemporaneous videos clearly demonstrating she’d been murdered.

In LA, Chicago, Minneapolis, and elsewhere, Trump’s ICE and Border Patrol thugs also fatally shot a migrant during a traffic stop; caused the deaths of several fleeing capture; committed at 11 non-fatal shootings, including 2 subsequent ones in Portland; and assaulted and maimed many others, including concerned citizens documenting their violent raids and traffic stops. Additionally, 32 migrants died in ICE custody—making 2025 the deadliest year in 2 decades.

As militarized, masked raids on civilian neighborhoods expand, casualties are increasing without accountability. Rather than de-escalating situations, they’re increasing bloodshed through reckless, cruel, masked paramilitary fear-stoking.

SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753

My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

As your constituent, I am calling on you to use the National Immigration Law Center’s useful toolkit to hold DHS accountable for its lawlessness and misinformation (https://www.nilc.org/resources/holding-dhs-accountable-for-lawlessness-a-toolkit-for-members-of-congress/) and to demand:

  1. Congress immediately pause negotiations on the 2026 DHS appropriations bills and impound all appropriated funding of Trump’s deportation machine while investigations are conducted by the appropriate congressional committees concerning a) the murder of Renee Good, b) the killings and systematic abuse of immigrants by these federal agents and the deadly conditions in detention facilities, c) the recruitment and training practices of these agencies that lead to these killings, systematic abuse, and dehumanization of migrants and citizens coming to their aid.

  2. Immediate withdrawal of all ICE and Border Patrol agents from Minnesota;

  3. A thorough, independent, and community-informed investigation of the Good murder ,in which the FBI works with the state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension;

  4. Prosecution to the full extent of the law of all officers and individuals who were complicit in Good’s murder and the subsequent government cover up;

  5. Abolishing ICE and rescinding all its funding;

  6. Immediate filing of Articles of Impeachment against Kristi Noem and Donald Trump for their attempts to manipulate and lie to the American people about Good’s murder and other agency misconduct.

I also expect you to speak out against media agencies who have been cooperative and complicit with government policies endangering not only immigrant communities and black and brown people, but also against us all.

Finally, I ask you to consider the fairness of allowing working families to suffer while Congress appropriates billions for detention camps, surveillance contracts, and expanded enforcement, rather than the healthcare, housing, and community safety we need.
