STOP ICE FROM EXPANDING AND NORMALIZING MASS CONFINEMENT BY THE 100,000’S IN WAREHOUSES UNFIT FOR HUMANs

QUICK READ: The Trump administration is ruthlessly pursuing a multi-layered detention expansion plan, skyrocketing the capacity of their network of jails, prisons, and military bases with the purchase of dozens of large warehouse and industrial spaces that will allow the mass, long term detention of at least 100,000 in dangerous concentration camp-like facilities unfit for humans.

BACKGROUND

The Trump administration is ruthlessly pursuing a multi-layered detention expansion plan, skyrocketing the number of people in their detention network of jails, prisons, and military bases by acquiring large warehouses and industrial spaces for mass detention. ICE plans to purchase 23 warehouses, adding nearly 100,000 beds, to normalize the long-term confinement of illegally disappeared immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers captured through escalating violent and aggressive worksite and neighborhood raids.

Most warehouses will end up in predominantly working-class and non-white areas already negatively impacted by the logistics industry. Resources will be diverted, tax revenues cut, and economic opportunities foreclosed, all while bypassing local elected officials and regulations and deepening ICE’s culture of secrecy and complete lack of transparency.

Confining people in these makeshift concentration camps, cut off from their loved ones, and support networks and lacking the sewage and water infrastructure needed to ensure detainees’ basic health, exponentially increases their likely abuse and death in ICE custody.

Local water and sewer system infrastructures, not built for these massive numbers, will also likely be overrun, adding harmful pollutants to local waterways.

The perverse financial incentives, all funded by American taxpayers, are glaring. Warehouse owners receive well above market value for their properties, and companies, such as Palantir, CoreCivic, and The GEO Group, who contributed massively to Trump’s reelection campaign, earn billions from these developments.

Americans are disgusted with the entire mass deportation system, which is rotten to the core and must be stopped. Public officials at all levels of government must fight this expansion to protect our people and communities.

ACTION One: Call the Senate.

Script for Oregon Senators

SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753

My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

It is imperative that our local, state, and federal representatives strongly and repeatedly speak out against the purchase of ICE warehouses, educate their constituencies about the imminent and serious consequences of these warehouse concentration camps which are unfit for human confinement, and call for the immediate cancellation of all warehouse detention plans and conversions and for legislation prohibiting state and local governments from using public funding or local resources for detention expansion. I also expect you to stand strong on the push to rein in ICE’s cruel and illegal behavior and think creatively about how to claw back the money that is being used to terrorize communities and to treat those illegally ensnared as less than human. The American people demand nothing less.
