Make NSPM-7 A Household Name: Protest and Political Opposition Is Not “The Enemy Within”
QUICK READ: Last September, Donald Trump signed a sweeping and unconstitutional executive order called NSPM-7, for which he is now demanding Congress appropriate a whopping $166 million increase to his counterterrorism budget. The order directs federal law enforcement to proactively investigate and arrest progressive activists and organizations as likely "domestic terrorists.” As such, it threatens human rights, civil liberties, freedom of speech, and democracy-building.

BACKGROUND
Last September, in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s murder, Trump signed “National Security Presidential Memo 7 (NSPM-7), a sweeping and unconstitutional executive order directing the FBI and IRS to identify and investigate progressive activists and organizations as likely "domestic terrorists."
A "domestic terrorist" is vaguely defined in this memo as anyone holding “extremist" positions on race, gender, and/or migration; expressing views hostile to "traditional American" families or religion; or showing support for "anti-capitalism." Under this rubric, the FBI’s also pursuing “Antifa”—a chimerical group of beliefs, not an organization—Trump considers a national, internal enemy.
Prosecutions under NSPM-7, including convictions for such innocuous behavior as simply wearing black clothing to an anti-ICE protest, are up 300%, and the FBI /IRS investigations could strangle nonprofit newsrooms, advocacy groups, and community coalitions with baseless audits and revoked tax-exempt status.
Now Trump’s asking Congress for a massive $166 million increase in “counterterrorism funding”—the largest in years—to fund an FBI-run “NSPM-7 Joint Mission Center” of personnel drawn from 10 federal agencies tasked with silencing dissent.
Despite the massive repression on the horizon, mainstream media’s been largely silent.
