I am horrified and infuriated that Donald Trump is dragging us into another Middle Eastern quagmire. The two decades spent with U.S. soldiers fighting and dying in this region cost us too many lives and too much money, and we have far too little to show for it.
It’s not clear how we can permanently stop Iran’s nuclear program without a full-on invasion and occupation. And anything short of that could get a lot of our troops and a lot of innocent civilians in multiple countries killed without solving anything. In fact, these strikes may well encourage Iran to become a nuclear power.
The Constitution does not allow just one man to make this decision, and the Trump Administration cannot be trusted to make it—since they’re reckless and careless, lie about everything, fired too many qualified generals, ignore basic security measures, and disrespect our troops.
Congress needs to do its job and check their power. As your constituent, I demand that you vote to stop these strikes and block further escalation of attacks on Iran. Do not rubber stamp this unnecessary, unpopular, half-baked war. Please publicly announce you will back the pending War Powers resolutions and support a diplomatic solution. I will be calling you every day to express my abhorrence at Trump’s behavior and remind you of the need for swift congressional action.
