DON’T LET TRUMP BLUNDER US INTO WAR
QUICK READ: Despite overwhelming popular opposition to becoming involved in another endless war in the Middle East, Netanyahu is trying to get Trump to do just that. Congress must reclaim its constitutional power to declare war and peace, preventing Trump from recklessly and flippantly blundering us into this disastrous, unauthorized Middle East war and, in the process, protecting our democracy from Trump’s ever expanding executive overreach.
CONTENTS:
BACKGROUND
Last week, Israel attacked Iran, killing hundreds of civilians, undermining nuclear agreement negotiations between the US and Iran, and threatening to further destabilize the Middle East and draw us into yet another military conflict there.
Although Trump promised, while campaigning, to keep us out of such wars, he and his MAGA allies appear eager to help Netanyahu attempt (unsuccessfully) to destroy Iran’s subterranean nuclear facilities by dropping American bombs from American planes—putting at risk the 35,000 US troops stationed in the Middle East and sparking a massive regional conflict and potentially a third World War.
Americans are tired of the ill-defined wars we fought for decades in Iraq and Afghanistan and don’t want Trump to flippantly ensnare us in Israel’s war with Iran. Only 16% of voters—and 19% of 2024 Trump voters—polled just days ago want us to get involved.
The message from your constituents is clear: oppose US involvement, funding, weapons, or troops fighting another endless Middle East war.
There are numerous ways to accomplish this, since the Constitution gives Congress, not Netanyahu or Trump, both the ultimate power to declare war and the power of the purse:
Cosponsor and push for passage of the War Powers resolutions precluding Trump from providing Israel with military assistance without explicit congressional authorization or a formal declaration of war. As “privileged motions,” they’re entitled to swift consideration and up-or-down votes as early as July 1 and 2.
Cosponsor and push for legislation, like the No War Against Iran Act cosponsored by Sen. Merkley, banning use of federal funds without congressional authorization.
Decrease the 2026 Pentagon budget to remove funding for any Middle East warmongering.
ACTION One: Call the Senate.

For the first time in decades, America is not fighting ill-defined, never-ending wars overseas, and the vast majority of Americans want to keep things this way. Trump’s flippancy about whether to intervene with our troops, planes, and bombs, as Netanyahu wants, and his belief he can make this decision unilaterally are also extremely disturbing. As your constituent, I demand that you do everything in your power to reassert Congress’ power to declare war and prevent this folly from continuing by: (1) pushing for passage of the pending War Powers resolution, (2) getting others to sponsor the No War Against Iran Act and, (3) stripping from the Pentagon’s upcoming budget funds earmarked for Middle East warmongering.
