DEMOCRATS: KEEP FIGHTING TO PROTECT OUR FREEDOMS AND OUR CONTINUED PROSPERITY

QUICK READ: On July 4, while Americans were celebrating our freedoms, Trump was touting the cruelest, most draconian and oppressive legislation in 150+ years which erases many of these freedoms and transforms our country into a police state. Democrats, united in the fight to protect these freedoms and America’s social safety net, lacked the votes to prevail. We must thank them for their fierce efforts on our behalf and urge them to remain united in the upcoming battle to tie every Republican incumbent to the bill’s monstrous human results.

BACKGROUND

On July 4, while Americans were celebrating our freedoms, Trump was touting the cruel, draconian, oppressive law, enacted solely with Republican votes, which erases many of these freedoms and transforms out country into a police state:

  • Ripping apart the social safety net, consigning millions—many of them children—to a life without decent nutrition and medical care;

  • Delivering the largest ever wealth transfer to the rich;

  • Supercharging Trump’s violent, reckless, and cruel deportation machine, which can now expand its unconstitutional kidnapping, trafficking, and confinement of non-criminals.

Outnumbered in both chambers, but united in opposition, Democrats did everything possible to stop this unpopular, fascistic bill, educate the public about its provisions, and pressure, shame, and expose Republicans’ cruelty.

Senators challenged and knocked out as many harmful measures as possible, required the weekend reading of the full bill, and, in a 24-hour record-breaking Vote-a-Rama involving 45+ amendments and procedural motions to amend or block it, and forced GOP Senators to demonstrate repeatedly on national television how their only constituent was Donald Trump.

Representatives tried unsuccessfully to convince just 4 Republicans to help them kill the bill. For a record-setting 8+-hours, Hakeem Jeffries held the floor, underscoring Democrats’ devotion to ordinary Americans and calling out vulnerable Republicans. In press conferences and speeches, Democrats blasted the bill for attacking vulnerable Americans and offered numerous unsuccessful amendments, including one precluding cuts to Medicaid and SNAP.

Democrats lost the battle but can still win the war. The next step requires all Congressional Democrats to regularly tie Republican incumbents to the bill’s monstrous human results.

ACTION One: Call the Senate.

Script for Oregon Senators

SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753

My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

I am calling to thank you, and all your Democratic colleagues, who fought long and hard to try to prevent passage of Trump’s regressive, dangerous, unpopular, fascistic bill. The next step, which begins immediately, requires all Congressional Democrats to make Republican incumbents individually responsible for the suffering they’ve unleashed—every hospital closed, family losing healthcare or SNAP, scientific researcher or green energy worker becoming unemployed, family going without heat, student denied higher education, immigrant or American terrorized by ICE.
