It is possible GOP Senators have again bamboozled enough spineless Democrats into agreeing to vote for a short-term CR containing neither extension of the ACA tax subsidies nor a promise against future recission of its terms. THE FIRST VOTE MAY COME AS EARLY AS THIS EVENING.
Reopening the government without these provisions would be, according to Senate and House leaders, “a policy and political disaster.”
The CR, which only funds the government through January 30, would recall laid-off workers and ensure those furloughed receive retroactive pay—which is already the law, despite Trump’s threat not comply. It would also bar additional mass layoffs through January 30.
Since it is highly unlikely the needed 12 budget bills would be passed by both Houses in the few weeks Congress is in session between now and then, another CR will be needed—putting the country back in the same situation again. Nor does the CR protect any of this funding from recission, which Trump accomplished with the funding Democrats obtained last March.
Have these spineless Democrats learned nothing about Trump’s and his MAGA lackeys’ untrustworthiness?
In Tuesday’s elections, Democratic voters were highly energized and the majority of Americans rightly blame Trump and his MAGA lackeys for the shutdown.
There is still time to protect the ACA tax subsidies and force Trump to accept that Congress actually controls the purse. Americans are counting on you to do this.
