***IMMEDIATE ACTION***NO BACKTRACKING ON REINING IN FEDERAL ENFORCEMENT: AMERICANS ARE COUNTING ON YOU [02-08-26]
Americans see what Trump’s rogue, militarized police force is doing in Minneapolis and how it’s completely upending the lives of all Minneapolitans.
And. They. Want. It. To Stop. Immediately. There. And. Everywhere.
Congressional Democrats, at least, have heard their pleas. They’re refusing to fund DHS until Trump’s militarized occupation of “blue” American cities stops, deplorable conditions at his concentration camps are improved, and ICE and CBP are meaningfully reformed.
MAGA Republicans ignore the public outcry at their peril, playing hardball while expecting Democrats to cave—as, unfortunately, they’ve done before under similar circumstances.
While Democrats’ demands are good first steps, they don’t get rid of Noem and Miller (the violence’s architects); send CBP back to the border; return occupied cities to their prior status; prohibit children’s arrest, detention, and use as leverage; claw back the outrageous sums not part of DHS’ annual budget; or impose consequences for ignoring court orders or slow-walking reforms. These can only be accomplished by withholding previously approved funds for any DHS noncompliance.
When Democrats voted to fund everything but DHS, they gave up some leverage. They cannot afford to give up any more by supporting another DHS continuing resolution, funding for all DHS agencies except ICE and CBP, or allowing masking for “extraordinary and unusual circumstances”—a loophole entirely negating the requirement.
We must continue reminding our MoCs that Americans expect them to protect all our communities from the horrors of Trump’s occupation army and demand that any DHS funding bill contain, at a minimum:
*All the above reforms with economic penalties for noncompliance,
*A promise to immediately remove all immigration enforcement agents from American cities,
*Permanent cuts to ICE and CBP funding.
PS: Simon Rosenberg also suggests Democrats force a debate about agents narrowing their targets to focus only on dangerous criminals—if they did so, they wouldn’t need all that extra money or additional detention capacity.
