***IMMEDIATE ACTION*** IT’S TIME FOR COMMON SENSE GUN LEGISLATION [9-17-25]
Instead of a bell, gunfire is the mark of another school year in America. In Minneapolis, Catholic school students were shot while praying, several were injured, and the 23-year-old shooter then killed himself. Weeks later, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated at Utah Valley University while speaking at a political event. The same day, a student opened fire at a Colorado High School, injuring 2 students before turning the gun on himself.
The U.S. overwhelmingly leads the world in school shootings, and Kirk’s assassination has focused national media attention on our unique gun violence epidemic.
The availability of guns, growing internet hate speech, and the absence of meaningful legislation only worsens this epidemic. America has 1.5 guns for every citizen—including children—and the world’s highest rate of gun deaths. Upon buying Twitter, Elon Musk canceled its policies moderating misinformation—leading to a 50% rise in hate speech and the proliferation of networks radicalizing youngsters online. Kirk, himself, recognized death as the price paid for protecting Second Amendment rights, despite advocating for pro-life policies.
Studies show that states with stronger gun laws have less gun violence. Ironically, had Kirk been speaking in such a state, he might still be alive.
Gun violence’s frightening heights is a reflection of our dark culture. Our leaders, willing only to offer “thoughts and prayers,” refuse to act. Implementing common-sense gun legislation is a simple first-step towards addressing this cancer.
Rather than using these recent tragedies to attack Democrats and progressive organizations, let’s memorialize Charlie Kirk’s murder in legislation strengthening our national gun laws—creating a safer country for our kids.
