***IMMEDIATE ACTION***WE CAN’T LET RUSSIA BE THE ULTIMATE WINNER IN TRUMP’S IRAN WAR [04-01-26]
Early this year, the Russian economy was reeling from the strain of its Ukraine war and U.S.-imposed oil sanctions stemming from Putin’s 2014 Crimea annexation. Moscow, desperate to sell its oil, was accepting as little as $22 a barrel—1/3 the world price.
All of this changed after Trump blindly joined Israel in waging war on Iran, which, by disrupting Middle Eastern oil production and shipment, created a global oil shortage with devastating consequences.
Frantic about rising gas prices in the US caused by his war of choice, Trump took the unprecedented step of unilaterally lifting sanctions against both Russian and Iranian oil, providing them each with billions of dollars in windfall oil profits they’re using in their war efforts against Ukraine, a US ally, and the US respectively.
Another “unanticipated consequence” of Trump’s war of choice against Iran is its impact on Russia and Ukraine. Putin’s been providing Iran with satellite images of US Middle Eastern military bases it subjected to drone attacks that wounded or killed almost 750 service members —over twice the number the Pentagon’s acknowledged. Ukraine, for its part has deployed drone warfare specialists to help protect Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, the UAE, and American troops; and is monitoring Russian channels.
Despite Ukraine being our ally and Russia our enemy, Trump continues to cozy up to Putin while ignoring the Kremlin-Tehran axis and to trivialize Ukraine’s assistance to our allies, while publicly chastising Zelenski for prolonging the war with Russia. Both positions completely violate America’s national security interests.
This madness must stop. As a first step, Congress must condemn Trump’s militarism, reaffirm our commitment to Ukraine and demand the reimposition of oil sanctions.
