***IMMEDIATE ACTION***Trump’s Betrayal of Our Afghan Allies Must Stop [05-27-26]
Third-country deportations, a hallmark of Trump’s inhumane and racist mass deportation regime, is now being forced upon the 1100 Afghans currently housed at a U.S military base in Qatar. Rather allowing them to join their 190,000 countrymen already resettled here, Trump ‘s given them the Faustian choice of resettling in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or being repatriated to Afghanistan.
Their numbers include Afghan Special Operations forces and interpreters who fought with us against the Taliban and families of American soldiers. Housed in crowded containers inside a hangar for almost two years, many became traumatized, and several attempted suicide, but they always believed they’d get here eventually.
The fatal November 2025 attack of a National Guardsman by an Afghan immigrant changed everything, since Trump used it as an excuse to freeze the special visa program granting them access to the U.S.
Shortly thereafter, Trump announced the closure of the Qatar transit camp and Afghans were informed they could either go to the Congo, a faraway, unstable country mired in its own deep humanitarian crisis, or return to Afghanistan, where torture or death at the hands of the Taliban awaited them.
The Congo already has more than 600,000 refugees from neighboring war-torn countries crammed into makeshift camps and lacks the capacity to feed or resettle others, and the recent outbreak of Ebola makes an untenable situation much worse. Little wonder that most Afghans are refusing this option.
It is completely unconscionable for Trump to force our Afghan allies to make this Faustian choice. Our Members of Congress must join the growing number of colleagues demanding we keep our promises and ensure Afghans immediate admission to the U.S.
