***IMMEDIATE ACTION***CONGRESS MUST IMMEDIATELY END TRUMP’S TRADE WAR WITH CANADA [2026-09-09]
On August 25, invoking for the first time a provision in a 1930 Tariff Act allowing presidents to impose tariffs on foreign countries with threatening discriminatory trade policies, Trump announced a punishing 50% tariff on $20 billion of Canadian imports, raising the specter of a full-blown trade war with our second-largest trading partner.
Only in Trump's delusional world does Canada pose such a threat, since Ottawa and Washington have one of the world’s most integrated economic relationships.
Trump’s animosity’s been evident from Day One’s announcement he attended using “economic force” to absorb Canada into the U.S. Driven by his uncontrolled ego, his desire to subordinate Ottawa, and his use of trade as a weapon, these tariffs appear to be a step in that direction—at least to Canada’s Prime Minister who warned Trump was “trying to break us so that he can own us.”
Trump’s highly unpopular actions will require Americans to pay more for Canadian auto parts, dairy, wine, wood products, furniture, cement, ceramics and textiles and cost the average household $1100 annually. Ottawa’s retaliation—its own $20 billion tariff on U.S. products—will greatly reduce American farmers’ and manufacturers’ access to Canadian markets causing further American job losses.
Within hours, Trump , signally a full-blown trade war, imposed new restrictions on the Federal government’s ability to buy Canadian goods.
Congress cannot allow Trump to further punish the American people. The Constitution granted Congress the tariff power. It must wrest it back and, at a minimum, embrace Senator Schumer’s legislation reversing all the duties he imposed since July, undoing the statutory measures he used to implement them, and refunding the tariff revenues collected.
