Ground Truth: New Volunteer Orientation

Get involved with Ground Truth—Swing Left’s innovative, people-powered program that’s helping Democrats win back power by reimagining how we talk with voters. In this 30-minute orientation, you'll learn how to make an impact from anywhere, no matter your schedule or preferred type of action. Whether you want to knock doors, call voters, help recruit volunteers, or more, we need all hands on deck.

Why Ground Truth? The 2026 midterms are our next big chance to unseat Republicans and reverse the creep of authoritarian politics. Flipping the House is step one in checking this administration's agenda and building toward a full-fledged Democratic trifecta in 2028. But we can't keep talking to the same voters in the same way and expect a different result. With Ground Truth, we will:

  • Go big by talking to all swing district voters, not just likely Dems, because traditional voter contact too often misses persuadable voters.

  • Listen deeply to voters’ real-world concerns, including specific challenges faced in their communities, starting earlier than ever.

  • Using brand-new technology, directly share on-the-ground insights and rich data to strengthen the most competitive Democratic House campaigns.

Whether you're new to Swing Left or you've been with us from the beginning, this orientation is a great place to learn how to join the Ground Truth team!

Paid for by Swing Left, Swingleft.org, not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.

Rep. Maxine Dexter's telephone Town Hall

Rep. Maxine Dexter's telephone Town Hall

Dexter Invites Epstein Survivor to State of the Union in Her Place and Hosts Town Hall for Oregonians.

Congresswoman Maxine Dexter (OR-03) announced that she is inviting Lisa Phillips, a survivor of Epstein’s abuse, in her place to attend the State of the Union.

“Accountability is my north star,” said Rep. Dexter. “I’m inviting Lisa Phillips, one of the many brave women who survived Epstein’s abuse, to attend the State of the Union on my behalf. Her presence will send a clear message: Epstein survivors will not be silenced. The powerful will not be protected. Our government will be accountable to the people it serves. While Trump stands before the country and attempts to rewrite history, I will be talking with Oregonians about how we build a government that serves people, not the powerful.”

“I am deeply grateful to Representative Dexter for this honor. I sit in this seat not for myself, but for the girls who were never given a voice — and for the accountability they deserve,” said Lisa Phillips.

This month, President Trump urged the country to move on from the Epstein files. However, the administration continues to illegally redact and withhold files, protecting identities of powerful people and predators, while disclosing photos, names, and private information of survivors.

Rep. Dexter is a proud co-sponsor of the Epstein Files Transparency Act and helped force the vote to require the administration to release the files.

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) will hold a town hall meeting virtually by phone during the State of the Union, which is expected to take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 24. She will be joined by Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield.

“This is a critical time for Oregonians to come together and discuss how federal policies are affecting their lives,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “The Trump administration’s aggressive tactics and policies are making life more expensive, unpredictable, and dangerous for people across the state. These town hall meetings will be opportunities  for Oregonians to come together during these challenging times to express their concerns and share their ideas.”

People's Town Hall with Senators Wyden and Merkley

Wyden, Merkley Won’t Attend State of The Union, Will Instead Hold Virtual Town Hall for Oregonians on February 24

The Fate of The Union: Senators to co-host virtual town hall the same day as the State of the Union to answer Oregonians’ questions about protecting the Constitution and resisting Donald Trump’s assaults on the Bill of Rights.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley today announced they will not attend the State of the Union speech on Tuesday, February 24 and will instead co-host a live on-line town hall that day with People’s Town Hall to offer all Oregonians the opportunity to ask questions as well as share their ideas and viewpoints.

“Sitting through Donald Trump’s unhinged ramblings about his unconstitutional schemes does nothing to help Oregonians justifiably concerned about his attacks on the economy and the law as well as his desperate diversions from the Epstein investigation,” Wyden said. “Rather than hearing a so-called State of the Union from a self-absorbed liar, I’ll hear the truth from my fellow Oregonians in the best state of the union.”

“After a year in office, Trump has made America poorer and sicker,” said Merkley. “We know Trump says one thing but then does another. He ran for president promising to help working people, but in office he’s only helped the rich and powerful. Trump is putting up red tape for families and rolling out the red carpet for billionaires. Every day of the week, I’ll choose to boycott the wannabe dictator and connect with Oregonians.”

The on-line town hall on Tuesday, February 24 will begin at 2:30 pm PT (3:30 pm MT) and can be watched here on YouTube. Oregonians who want to ask a question during the virtual town hall can submit their questions in advance here.

“Direct dialogue with our leaders is a cornerstone of our democracy, and it’s never been more important for our elected representatives to listen to the people they work for: their constituents,” said Nathan Williams of People’s Town Hall, a town hall series from the founders of Town Hall Project. “People’s Town Hall is proud to host this important conversation with Senators Wyden and Merkley and their fellow Oregonians.”

Both Senator Wyden and Senator Merkley hold a town hall in each of Oregon’s 36 counties every year.

Our goal: to help Democrats rebuild trust, win tough races, and flip the House. We're bringing people together to build the community of real people, having real conversations with real people. During Ground Truth phone banks, we will talk to as many people as possible and focus on listening.

At this phone bank, we’ll:

  • Call ALL types of voters -- not just those who vote like us.

  • Have real conversations that LISTEN deeply to voters’ concerns.

  • Gather insights to share with campaigns, so they can be responsive to voters’ needs and smarter with their messaging, targeting, and outreach.

Don’t worry if it’s your first time—training, materials, and support are all provided. Just come prepared with your phone and laptop or computer!

We recommend using earbuds or using speakerphone to free up your hands as well!

Ground Truth: New Volunteer Orientation

Canvassing With Empathy - Zoom Training

Canvassing With Empathy - Zoom Training

CANVASSING WITH EMPATHY (A.K.A. Deep Canvassing) is a method of voter outreach that involves having authentic, empathetic conversations with individuals about how they want government to serve them. Unlike traditional canvassing (which uses a script designed to persuade constituents to support a candidate or cause), CANVASSING WITH EMPATHY fosters a more in-depth and genuine way of connecting with voters to discuss the importance of electing leaders who represent one’s values and interests.

The purpose is to build sincere relationships with voters by actively listening to their beliefs and experiences and by sharing personal stories to foster common ground, empathy, and mutual respect.

SWING LEFT and INDIVISIBLE groups are partnering to conduct multiple trainings and canvassing efforts in key swing districts across the U.S., including Oregon’s critical 5th congressional district. The goal is to repair what’s broken in Democratic organizing by rebuilding trust and restoring faith in our electoral process. We want to hear from voters bout their top concerns, and we want to make sure that candidates running for election address those concerns directly!

This is a 2-hour ZOOM event that includes role playing and examples of how to canvass. Whether you are an experienced canvasser or have never canvassed before - this training is designed to give anyone the tools to have meaningful conversations with voters that are satisfying and even fun!

A zoom link will be sent ONE WEEK before the training to everyone who signed up.
